Presentazione della Nuova Serie by Aldo Carera, Alberto Cova is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 SAGGIIl «problema della democrazia» e i corpi intermedi: teoria politica e dottrina sociale della Chiesa (1961-1991)
Abstract ∨
The aim of this paper is to reflect on the special attention that the social doctrine of the Church and democratic theory give to intermediate bodies, especially between 1961 and 1991. During these years, the social encyclicals insist a great deal on the importance of the expression of human sociality through the action of intermediate bodies; at the same time, political theory stresses the indispensability of intermediate institutions for the strengthening of democracy and political representation. Recalling these moments – and their problematic implications – can also be very helpful in understanding the difficulties that threaten contemporary democracy.

Abstract ∨
ACLI in Milan from 1962 to 1967 experienced a gradual change in identity and activity from the 1950s. A process in which individual militants and individual local sections discuss certain issues: the effects of industrialization on local systems; the mission of Christian workers within the conciliar Church; the relationship with other Catholic associations and finally with the DC. The confrontation of the ‘base’ of the ACLI brings out the first ‘ripples’ that will have consequences in the subsequent season of Sixty-Eight and unfolds with a role of orientation and representation exercised by the leading groups that brings out, however, an increasingly pronounced differentiation between exponents and with respect to the aclista history of the ‘glorious’ 1950s.

Abstract ∨
Starting from an analysis of the strike for housing organised in September 1963, the essay reconstructs the internal evolution of the Milan CISL, highlighting both the elements of continuity and the first signs of the conflictual attitude that would have characterised this union during the so-called ‘warm autumn’.

Abstract ∨
In reaction to the ‘socialist hypothesis’ of Emilio Gabaglio’s presidency, in the early 1970s some of the members of the ACLI left a movement, whose ‘consensus’ had been revoked by the CEI and for which Paul VI expressed his regret. In 1972, the Movimento Cristiano Lavoratori was born from the splinter groups, faithful to the social doctrine of the Church, with an effort to outline a cultural perspective opposed to revolutionary Marxism, as well as the

Historicizing Democracy and Dissent within the Jeunesse Ouvrière Chretienne Internationale (1945-2000)
Abstract ∨
The Jeunesse Ouvrière Chrétienne Internationale (JOCI), established in 1945 and a key organization of post-war Catholic internationalism, witnessed a crisis when several national branches left the international structure and founded the rivalling Coordination Internationale de la Jeunesse Ouvrière Chrétienne (CIJOC) in 1986. This crisis is an interesting vantage point to rethink the history of JOCI and more broadly of Catholic internationalism as it evolved after WWII. Seeking a comprehensive understanding of this scission and its significance in the broader field of Catholic internationalism, this contribution places the history of the JOCI against the backdrop of the supposed ‘fragmentation’ of the Catholic international landscape that occurred in the 1960s. In doing so, it highlights longstanding tensions surrounding global expansion and institutional democracy, as well as the impact of ecclesial pressure on the jocist movement. In this light, the events of 1986 emerge as a combination of long-term rifts and short-term political maneuvering.

Abstract ∨
This paper aims to study the circulation of ideas and actors generated through the Latin American Center for Human Economy (CLAEH) in Montevideo, capital of Uruguay, which articulated the network of the French movement Economy and Humanism in Latin America. It covers the period from 1957, when the center was created, to 1966, when the Dominican priest Louis-Joseph Lebret, founder of Économie et Humanisme and main promoter of CLAEH, died.

Abstract ∨
The essay reviews some of the most important studies published in the past two decades on the history of Eastern dissent and its reception in the West. What emerges is the variety of ‘forms’ in which dissent was expressed within communist regimes between the 1960s and the 1980s. Moreover, historiography has highlighted the role of dissent in the dialogue between civil societies on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

Abstract ∨
The autonomy of workers’ organizations in pluralist democracies as a premise for growing, through collective bargaining and the spaces of participation. This was the profound sense of Mario Romani’s thinking. Romani identified two phases of the affirmation of autonomy in Italy. In the 1950s, the phase of social autonomy, understood as recognition of the role of free trade union associations, within the framework of private-collective relations. Two decades later, the phase of democratic autonomy vis-à-vis mass parties and an increasingly present state in Italian society. Today, given the crisis of representation of social actors, the issue of trade union autonomy deserves attention and is still relevant. It constitutes Romani’s cultural legacy to the new series of the Bollettino dell’Archivio per la storia del Movimento Sociale Cattolico in Italia (BAMSCI).
