Schefold, Amintore Fanfani e le tesi di Max Weber Amintore Fanfani, conosciuto non solo come uomo politico, ma anche come storico dell’economia e del pensiero economico, rifiutò la tesi, da lui attribuita a Max Weber, secondo la quale il capitalismo nacque con il protestantesimo. Fanfani pensava che il capitalismo fosse sorto nel Nord Italia nel tardo medioevo, nonostante la contrapposizione tra i principi capitalistici e l’etica cattolica e in base ad essa cercò di formulare un ragionevole compromesso. Il saggio sostiene che ci fu un’incomprensione: come emerge chiaramente dai suoi successivi scritti, Weber evidenziava solo un legame tra l’origine del capitalismo moderno e il calvinismo, ma il calvinismo non fu la sola causa del capitalismo moderno, c’erano forme precedenti e molteplici di capitalismo, inclusa quella dei primi stati cittadini italiani, nonché un capitalismo politico in antichità; un tentativo viene fatto per esemplificare le principali differenze tra queste forme. Amintore Fanfani, famous not only as a politician, but also as an economic historian and as a historian of economic thought, rejected the hypothesis that capitalism originated with Protestantism, which he attributed to Max Weber. Fanfani proposed that capitalism arose in Northern Italy in the late Middle Ages, despite the contrast between capitalist principles and catholic ethics for which he tried to formulate workable compromises. The paper argues that there was a misunderstanding: Weber only emphasized a connection between the origin of modern capitalism and Calvinism as becomes clear from his late writings. Calvinism was not the only cause of modern capitalism, there were various and earlier forms of capitalism, including that of the early Italian city states, but also a political capitalism of Antiquity; an attempt is made to characterise the main differences between these forms.
