The contribution contains the reflections presented at the opening of the Conference ‘‘Ripensare il lavoro, ritrovare il lavoro’’, organized by the Faculty of the Economics of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. In particular, after considering some passages of the works by John Locke and Adam Smith showing a propensity of liberal-capitalist thought to ‘commodify labour’, some alternatives from the Social Doctrine of the Church and from the recent teachings of Pope Francesco are proposed. Only a radical cultural transformation, teaching to put the respect for human dignity before the production of economic value, can allow to overcome the tendency to consider labour as a commodity.
